Area divers ready for regional

Staff report

Four divers from the Starz Diving team based in Noblesville will compete this weekend in the Junior Spring Regional Championships in Denver, Colorado.

Two divers are from Noblesville — Katie Bittner and Meghan Potee. Bittner (13) and Potee (14) both have broken the school record at Noblesville Middle School. Potee holds the current middle school standard. Both divers also are veterans of national-level diving.

They will be joined in Denver by teammates Krissy Riley of Pendleton and Natalie Winings of Brownsburg. Riley and Winings are both 16 and will compete in the 16-18 age division. Potee will dive in the 14-15 classification and Bittner will compete in the 13-under.

All four girls will compete in the 1-meter and 3-meter competitions. The meet serves as a qualifier. The top six in each event move on to national competition.

The Noblesville team is coached by Noblesville High School graduate Cory Yeager. As a senior in 1999, Yeager placed fourth at the state meet. He went on to dive at the University of Nebraska until the school cut the program in 2001. Yeager is assisted by Steve Hoeferle, who also coaches at Hamilton Heights.

Yeager said the Noblesville Starz team has room for growth.

“We want to build the club to have numbers for an elite diving team,” said Yeager. “We're looking for kids of all ages who want to try it out. I have tons of room for growth. I could take 50 more kids.”

Yeager said there is a $25 registration fee. An additional monthly fee is determined by the level of an athlete's participation.

Noblesville's David Boudia participated in Starz Diving and is now considered the top platform (10-meter) diver in the country. He is a part of the USA Diving team which is currently competing at the FINA Grand Prix Spring Swallows meet in Electrosol, Russia. After the Spring Swallows, which ends March 12, Boudia will compete in the Communidad de Madrid from March 16-19.
