Four divers earn the right to compete in Youth Olympic Games qualifier

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Four divers have earned the right to represent the U.S. in next month’s Youth Olympics Game qualifier in Mexico. They earned their spots by placing first in a USA Diving selection event Wednesday and Thursday to determine who would represent the U.S. in the qualifying meet on March 12-13.

The competition in Mexico will decide which divers qualify for the inaugural Youth Olympic Games, set for August 14-26 in Singapore. Divers who were born in 1993 or 1994 are eligible to participate.

Kaylea Arnett (Spring, Texas), Andrew Cramer (Indianapolis, Ind.), Michael Hixon (Amherst, Mass.) and Annika Lenz (Altadena, Calif.) won their respective events in the selection meet to earn the right to compete in Mexico and then in Singapore, should they advance.

Arnett will compete in the girls’ 3-meter event after scoring 421.00 points in the selection event.

“It’s cool because this is a new experience. It’s something that’s never been done before, and I’m excited to see what it’s all about,” said Arnett, a silver medalist at the 2008 Junior World Championships.

Cramer scored 465.70 points in the boys’ 10-meter event to earn his spot in the Youth Olympics qualifying meet.

“I felt really good out there, especially on my back 1 ½, 3 ½. It had been two years since I’d done that dive,” said Cramer, a 2009 junior national champion on platform.

Hixon, a five-time junior national champion, scored 530.65 to top the boys’ 3-meter field.

“It would be really exciting to represent the U.S. in the first ever Youth Olympic Games. Anytime you get to dive for the U.S., it’s pretty cool,” said Hixon, who won two bronze medals at last year’s Junior Pan American Championships.

Lenz scored 430.65 points to win the girls 10-meter platform event.

“I’d be really honored to represent the U.S.,” said Lenz, a silver medalist at the 2009 Junior Pan Ams.

The selection event was held in conjunction with USA Diving’s Winter National Championships and World Cup Trials, which run from Feb. 4-8. All four divers are also competing in that event.
