Doug Hartley has been named the interim coach at Noblesville's Starz Diving Club in the wake of the resignation of head coach Cory Yeager. Yeager, who led the local team for a little more than two years, resigned to take the head coaching job at the University of California-San Diego and will also work for the Taylor Made Divers club team in San Diego.

Hartley has run a Starz diving club chapter in Kokomo since 2002. In 2005-2006, Hartley was the head diving coach for the Kokomo High and Middle School diving teams.

“Cory has gotten these kids to an elite level,” said Hartley. “Those are big shoes to fill.”

Hartley will be assisted by current Noblesville Starz lesson's coach Steve Hoeferle. Hoeferle has been the diving coach at Hamilton Heights since 1999 and joined the Starz organization in 2005.

Both Hoeferle and Hartley are excited about an upcoming call-out which should increase the enrollment in their program.

From 7:45 to 8:45 a.m. and from noon to 1 p.m. on June 27, the Noblesville Starz program is looking for interested children ages five through 18 who want to learn how to do springboard diving using the Starz format.

The Noblesville Starz diving program is a satellite of the Starz Diving Club, which began in Indianapolis in 1998. Starz teams compete against each other during the year.

The Starz program has more than 500 participants in Indiana and is the largest diving organization in the United States. The program has produced such local talents as Noblesville's David Boudia. Boudia has been selected to compete in international events for the U.S. national team and is an Olympic hopeful for 2008.

In addition to being affiliated with a top diving program, Hoeferle stresses that local children get to use an excellent outdoor facility at Forest Park.

“It's a world class facility out there,” said Hoeferle. “It is one of the best in the nation.”

Hartley will also take over the travel program in Yeager's absence. Noblesville's Meghan Potee and Katie Bittner along with Pendleton's Krissy Riley will compete on the travel team Friday through Sunday at the Junior Region IV championships in Bloomington. The travel team divers train 2-5 hours a day, six days a week for competition.

Although those swimmers compete at about a level five, the Starz program starts divers out at a level one and can facilitate their progress up to a level 10. A level 10 is the level where Olympic divers compete.

Children need only to be able to swim to participate.

“We think we are a reasonably priced sport that kids can get involved in throughout the summer,” said Hoeferle. “We also put it at an hour that people can attend. “

Hartley also wants to use the Starz program to build up the Noblesville High School diving program.

“We want to get as many kids as we can in the lessons program so we can build up the Noblesville swim program,” said Hartley. “When a kid comes in as a freshman, there's so much to learn. We want to get them at a younger age and teach them what they need to know so they'll be awesome divers in high school.”
