Cory Yeager is stepping down as head diving coach for Noblesville High School and the Starz diving club team in Noblesville.
The 1999 NHS graduate has been named the head diving coach for the men's and women's teams at the University of California-San Diego. Yeager will also work for the Taylor Made Divers club team in San Diego.
Yeager said that Dennis Taylor, who runs Taylor Made Divers, played a key role in bringing him to California.
“(Dennis) facilitated me getting the job contingent on me growing his club,” said Yeager. “Dennis has produced national level athletes for years. He has been involved in diving for 42 years as an athlete and a coach.
“Indianapolis is the diving capital of the country and he wants to bring some of that prestige to San Diego, which is kind of untapped when it comes to diving.”
Yeager said he has been looking to further his coaching career for the past year. He also said the work and success of his current group of Starz divers helped land him the new job.
“These girls are the reason I'm getting this opportunity,” said Yeager. “It was very hard to make the decision to leave those girls — probably the hardest decision I've had to make.”
The stars of Yeager's Starz club team have been Noblesville's Meghan Potee and Katie Bittner and Pendleton's Krissy Riley.
In the recent Junior Spring West National Championships in Minnesota, Minn., Potee placed fourth in the one-meter event of the 14-15 age group, less than 10 points away from winning the championship. She also placed 17th in the three-meter. Bittner also cracked the top 10 with a ninth place in the 12-13 age group's one-meter event. Riley, competing in the 16-18 division, placed 19th in the three-meter.
Bittner and Riley are currently preparing for the Junior Region IV championships in Bloomington. The meet will be held June 16-18.
Yeager will coach the girls in the upcoming meet and then leave for San Diego shortly thereafter. The 25-year-old recently graduated from IUPUI. He was the head coach at NHS for three years and led the Starz Noblesville team for two and a half years.
