Oklahoma divers shine at regional competition
OKLAHOMA CITY -- Nine local athletes competed at the U.S. Diving Spring Region VI Championships March 11-12 at the University of Denver.
Representing Oklahoma's newest diving program, Dive Oklahoma, were Robert Griffey, Jeremy Mulkey, Kylie Ruiz and Victoria Svetgoff of Moore, Samantha Hibdon, Amy Kilby, Anna Schuelein, and Shanna Schuelein of Oklahoma City, and Mathew Bumgarner of Tuttle.
The divers competed on one and three meter springboard in the 11 and under, 12-13, 14-15 and 16-18 age divisions. Dive Oklahoma excelled, earning a second-place team finish among 23 teams from around the region, while having less than half the athletes as the first- and third-place teams. Dive Oklahoma earned a total of six gold medals at the competition.
Final results for girls 11 and under age division had Samantha Hibdon in first place on 1-meter and fourth place on 3-meter and Anna Schuelein in fifth place on 1-meter and third place on 3-meter.
In the 12 to 13 age division, Shanna Schuelein won both the 1- and 3-meter girls competition.
Jeremy Mulkey won the boys 3 meter competition with Robert Griffey finishing in fifth. Mulkey finished second on 1-meter with Griffey taking fourth.
The 14 to 15 year old competition found Mathew Bumgarner the winner of the 1- and 3-meter boys events. Amy Kilby placed third with Victoria Svetgoff 11th in the 1-meter 14-15 girls competition. Kilby finished eighth with Svetgoff 13th in the 3-meter 14-15 girls competition.
The girls' 16-18 1-meter event was the largest with 70 girls competing. Kylie Ruiz made the cut to finals and ended in 20th place. She placed26th in the 3-meter 16-18 girls competition.
By placing in the top six regionally, athletes earned the right to compete at the U.S. Diving Spring National Championship in Minneapolis April 28-30. Seven of the nine athletes from Dive Oklahoma qualified to advance to the national competition.
